01
Footprint

A near-pure franchise model

DataLane maps roughly 5,738 Subway operators running about 21,834 locations across the U.S.—an average of 3.8 locations per operator. Nearly all are franchised, owner-operated businesses, not corporate stores, which is exactly the buyer you can reach with a direct mobile number.

02
Scale

Ownership stays broad, not concentrated

Unlike the most consolidated franchise systems, Subway ownership stays spread out. The 328 operators running 10 or more locations control only about 48% of U.S. locations—but the system isn't top-heavy: the 10 largest operators hold just 15% of locations, the top 25 about 22%, and the top 50 about 27%. Even the single largest operator runs just 598 locations, so reaching this system means reaching a wide base of operators, not a handful of giants.

03
Distribution

A long tail of single-store owners

Below the multi-unit tier sits a deep base of smaller owners: 70% of Subway operators—about 4,022—run just one or two locations, with another 1,388 running three to nine. That split is a filter: target the large portfolios for enterprise deals, or the single-store owners for volume—and DataLane tags every record with its location count.

04
Focus

Dedicated, mostly single-brand operators

Subway operators tend to run Subway and little else: just 38 of the 5,738 operators in DataLane's dataset also hold another franchise brand, most often Dunkin', Pizza Hut, and Auntie Anne's. When you reach a Subway operator, Subway is effectively their whole business.

How DataLane sources franchise owner data

Collections

We compile from public records, licensing databases, operator networks, and first-party research.

Joining and verification

We dedupe and join all of these datasets into a clean unified set, which we then validate using a combination of AI and human operators.

Refresh cadence

Net-new records are added every month. Existing records update continuously as ownership, domains, or phone numbers change.
